Portable Optical Analysis Business - Thermo Fisher Scientific Podcast

Rob Wright, Chief Editor of Life Science Leader Magazine, interviews Duane Sword, Vice President of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s portable optical analysis business. Sword describes how portable handheld scanning devices are being utilized in the process of policing counterfeit ingredients and drugs.

Sword admits that this new technology is not the "silver bullet" in stopping counterfeiting, but sees this as another tool in securing the supply chain. Dan Rather, a well known investigative reporter, utilized this same technology in an undercover operation in Nigeria, a hotbed for the counterfeit drug trade. Sword describes the different forms of handheld identification technologies available today and some of the benefits these devices can provide. Non scientific users can pick up a blister pack of tablets, go through the transparent packaging and have a very straight forward answer of pass or fail. Sword goes on to describe what a reading of “fail” may indicate, which is not necessarily that the drug is not authentic, but has somehow been compromised.
