In the distant past of Big Pharma, companies invented, developed, sold, and made their products almost entirely with internal functions. Some contract suppliers existed, and some pharma companies supplied finished product, typically to the generic and OTC markets, but generally, companies did not chiefly rely on contract manufacturers and research businesses to anywhere near the extent they do nowadays.
