Biopharmaceutical Industry CEO Of The Year — An Update

On April 25, 2017, I posted a blog asking the question, Who Is The Biopharmaceutical CEO Of The Year. In the blog, I included a link to a short survey. Our goal was twofold: see if there was enough interest in continuing to pursue such an award, and generate an initial list of names that would be in contention. Thus far, 10 names have been submitted via dozens of submissions, but it’s too early for us to make any decisions or conclusions based on such a small amount of data.

The catalyst for this project was the seemingly never-ending stream of biopharma-industry bashing that permeates the general media. Like you, we are often dismayed that not enough of the positive elements (e.g., breakthrough drugs, compassionate use programs, community involvement) of the biopharma industry garner the headlines. We knew that there are plenty of well-respected top biopharma executives who don’t get the credit they deserve, and we thought, perhaps, naming some of them and why they were nominated would help shed light on some of the positive aspects of the industry.

But to do that, we need your help.

Many of us look to the industry’s top leaders to set the tone for how our industry should be viewed. And yet, we, the masses that make up the bulk of the industry’s employees, aren’t thoroughly engaged in helping to shape the image in a more positive way. Imagine the power that could be generated if the thousands of life sciences employees lent a bit more positive support to their industry. We all could take individual leadership responsibility for making a positive difference [For more on this, be sure to read Noel Tichy’s The Leadership Engine]. After all, if we want the biopharmaceutical industry’s image to take a turn for the better, it is going to require a greater level of bottom-up engagement.

To be clear — this survey isn’t going to solve the tarnished image of biopharma. Neither is naming a top biopharma CEO (if we even get to that point).

Still, imagine the kind of positive groundswell that we could create.

If you have already responded to the survey, please don’t take it again. Instead, share it with at least two of your colleagues and encourage them to take it and share it with two of their friends in industry. And if you have some others ideas as to how we could improve the industry’s image, please pass them along to me by emailing to rob.wright@lifescienceleader.com or Tweet to @RFWrightLSL.
