Working in serious and rare diseases, I have seen the nature of innovation evolve immensely over the last several decades, starting with the passage of the 1983 Orphan Drug Act. Since then, incredible advancements have enabled us to treat diseases that previously had no options for patients. This pivotal shift opened the door to other technological innovations we now know are within reach, reinvigorating the field to turn its energy toward discovering solutions for challenges previously thought unsolvable and ushering in a new wave of patient-focused medicine.
