ECU, UNC Charlotte Earn Prestigious R1 Designation For Research Activity

Two universities in North Carolina, known for their expanding research capabilities, have achieved the highest possible classification for doctoral universities. On February 13, East Carolina University (ECU) and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) proudly announced their new status as Research 1 (R1) institutions, as designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. This prestigious R1 classification is awarded to universities with the highest levels of research activity and significant contributions to academic research and innovation.
