From Apple to Microsoft, to Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, there are plenty of companies founded by best friends. But for every success story, there are thousands of family-and-friend business flops. John Fowler was wrapping up his latest venture in late 2014 (i.e., the sale of HealthCPA, a company he cofounded), when he met with Chris Kirk, Ph.D., for their semi-annual catch-up lunch. “Our families have known each other since before we were born, and we were born just a few months apart,” Fowler shares of his oldest friend.
