In the early 1970s, economist E. F. Schumacher wrote a seminal book calling for capitalism to place people at the center. In Small Is Beautiful: Economics As If People Mattered, Schumacher wrote presciently of the long-term breakdown in trust that we have seen between many corporations and their employees in the decades since, calling for an economics concerned with people and the relationships between people, rather than with things and the relationships between things.
