Amgen Plans Over $1B Expansion In North Carolina, Creating 370 Jobs

Amgen, a global biopharmaceutical leader, is significantly expanding its biomanufacturing site in Holly Springs, N.C., with an additional $1.018 billion investment and 370 new jobs. This expansion, announced on December 5, 2024, brings the total planned investment at the site to over $1.5 billion and total jobs to 725, with an average salary of $91,527, significantly surpassing Wake County’s average wage.

The site will integrate Amgen’s FleXBatch technology, combining traditional and innovative drug manufacturing methods to enhance efficiency while advancing sustainability goals, such as reducing water use by 40% and achieving carbon neutrality by 2027. This announcement strengthens Holly Springs’ reputation as a biomanufacturing hub, building on other major investments, including FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies and Novo Nordisk’s expansions.

Amgen’s decision highlights North Carolina’s status as a premier life sciences destination, citing its skilled workforce and innovation ecosystem. The state provided incentives, including a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) worth nearly $4.9 million, projecting a $3.59 billion economic impact over 12 years.

Founded in 1980, Amgen has grown into a global leader in biopharmaceuticals, recognized for its innovative therapies. The company also supports workforce development through apprenticeships, initiatives for underserved communities, and programs like the Amgen Biotech Experience, inspiring future scientists.

This expansion not only bolsters Amgen’s production capabilities but also underscores North Carolina’s growing importance in life sciences, creating transformative opportunities for the region and the industry.
