Nearly all industries perform moisture analyses at some stage of production for quality assurance. In the pharmaceutical industry, control of moisture content helps to prevent microbial growth and ensures that bulk powders flow properly. The measurement of moisture content is also essential in the food industry as it affects microbial growth, shelf life, texture, mouth feel, bulk processing and the cost of products sold by weight. In the plastics industry, moisture content must be extremely low prior to injection molding | extruding for structural integrity and processibility of any plastic component.

Standard reference method organizations such as ISO, ASTM, and AOAC outline specific protocols for the moisture analysis of various materials. Typical reference methods use air ovens, vacuum ovens, or Karl Fischer titration. Temperature, sample size, sample preparation, and test duration | finalization are outlined in the protocols. Sartorius moisture analyzers significantly shorten the measurement compared to these reference methods.
