Lessons In Leaders Showing Up

There’s a story I once heard about an NFL quarterback, a multiple-league MVP and Super Bowl champion-caliber quarterback. Apparently, this person was scheduled to give a talk somewhere that required a plane flight. Unfortunately, his flight got canceled. So, he rented a car and drove to the venue, arriving a little harried and a tad late. When asked why he’d go through all the trouble, he stated that he had made the commitment to be there and would do whatever it took to honor that commitment. Obviously, this person was aware of how his fame positioned him in the eyes of many people, and he strived to protect this image and not damage his influence — on or off the field. Sometimes just showing up is half the battle.
