A: THERE ARE A LOT OF CONVERSATIONS THESE DAYS ON WHETHER YOU NEED A MENTOR OR A SPONSOR. Both are important. My most fulfilling experience was a combination mentor/sponsor relationship. The connection evolved from mentoring to sponsorship for an individual who had tremendous potential, but was in a role that didn’t maximize what she had to offer. A scientist by training, my mentee had a lot of interest, aptitude, and passion for sales and marketing. Our mentoring conversations centered around making the transition from the laboratory to sales. In addition to providing access to my network, I also used my relationship capital to advocate for her. It has been wonderful to watch her contributions and growth in the new space.
