Dr. Francois Rieger’s long and decorated academic career was rooted in basic science. He didn’t stray from those roots when he turned his attention to industry in 2011. The principles of basic science, he reasons, hold true regardless of how much money is behind a project or how much energy is driving commercial expectations. “Basic science is extremely important to having solid grounds for practical or industrial development,” he says. It’s a seemingly obvious statement, but one that’s often lost to overzealous commercial aspirations.
