Her mother was the first woman of her village in Cyprus to go to high school, though it meant moving to the city and living with another family. Mother also was one of the first women to go abroad to study and then one of the few women senior civil servants in the country. “My mother had a big influence in my life because she always had the attitude, if you have barriers in front of you, just figure out how to get over them and don’t let the barriers define or consume you,” says Anna Protopapas. “She still was a very conservative Greek woman, but she had this other part of herself that had a big influence on me and my siblings.”
