These days, it seems a majority of R&D platform-based companies also have development pipelines or plans to create one. It is not a foregone outcome. Developing a pipeline of products typically requires much different resources than an organization geared to support early discovery goals such as refining therapeutic modalities or selecting lead candidates. Platforms for post-discovery development usually lack the tools to manage all phases. Why and how do some of those companies tend to go about transforming themselves from technology suppliers into biotherapeutics developers — despite the challenges of such a major change?
